David, thanks once again for the weekly fix. I think I’m reasonably tuned into your style after all the practise. If this puzzle had appeared in weeks 1-4, I would have struggled a lot more than I did today.
We knocked this one off fairly quickly — so next week’s is bound to be a killer.
As always, there was plenty of fun in the clues, with some nice quirky definitions. I particularly liked 27ac and 9dn. I’ll explain why after the solution is published.

I just got around to reading your excellent Crossword Unclued interview. In the interview, you mention “the ‘no definition/wordplay etymology crossover’ rule at play in the US”. I think I understand what this means — I take it that “acclaimed”/”claimed” (mentioned elsewhere in your interview) breaks this rule. However, I’d love to see another example or two of clues which break this rule, with an explanation of why they break it. Perhaps it could be the subject of one of your weekly spiels. Or have you covered this subject already, and I’ve forgotten about it?
