  1. Richard Sternes says:

YAY! – Arthur – looks like I was On Course with S+S in 5d.

    • Arthur Maynard says:

Love it. I was intrigued by two courses the same. Not my usual cup of tea. And I had to work on my spelling to be sure how to use them plus the extra one in licensed. Of course the deli is the obvious place to get your courses.

  2. Steve Ball says:

I’m still not sure about S = south = course. South is a *direction* but I’m not sure that equates with a course.

Also, I’m lost on 5-dn and, as no one else is, it must just be me. A digitally captured image is a *scan*. So, if “scanned” is “digitally captured”., what do I do with “image” in the crpytic reading?

    Thanks,
    Steve = : ^ )

    • David Stickley says:

My references are consistent with a course being a direction especially in a nautical sense. From The Macquarie:
      course
      /kaws/.
      noun
      1. advance in a particular direction; onward movement.

      11. Nautical
      a. the point of the compass towards which a ship sails.

      And Chambers:
      course /körs or kōrs/
      noun
      1. The path in which anyone or anything moves
      2. The ground over which a race is run, golf is played, etc
      3. A channel for water
      4. The direction pursued

As for the SCANNED thing, you are right. The way I’ve worded it makes the “image” redundant. Unless you can say: “I scanned and put the result on my computer”, which doesn’t sound quite right.

      Best

      David

      • Greg Mansell says:

I have no concerns with the clue for 3dn. To scan is to digitally capture an image. So, for the wordplay, the first 3 words can be read as “digitally captured (an) image”.

        • Arthur Maynard says:

To me “Digitally captured image” does not necessarily identify a particular scan. It describes an action. He scanned = he digitally captured an image. “Digitally captured” could mean he used a digital camera or mobile phone which does not equate with scan. He may even have caught it with his fingers (perhaps a fly or a scrap of paper). I prefer the original clue. A bit late, but I checked this out today because I had nothing else to do. And I like a good discussion.

  3. Steve Ball says:

Point taken re ‘course’. 11. in the Mac and 4. in Chambers cover it nicely.

  4. Richard Sternes says:

It’s not over ’til it’s over.
Must remember to revisit here in the weekly wrap-up.
