    Settled on “The” – but then deleted “it” (network???) from “items.”

    David – for the 4d explanation, wouldn’t it make more sense to say “Anagram of CALEDONIANS makes ISLAND CANOE”? Especially when the clue says “…making island canoe”. The NEW in the answer is the anagram indicator – working upon CALEDONIANS.
    This is a fabulous clue, by the way.
